Very tough going; I had to break off, halfway through, but I hope to finish this novel before long. It is the fourth of a Frederica saga, each book a challenge yet engrossing.

Here is the background behind 'Still Life,' and it is definitely erudite, as the description says, with many references to literature and history especially from Elizabethan England. We gain deeper understanding of Stephanie, and Bill Potter is a formidable presence. But I kept wondering why so lengthy a book was needed. Here is the background behind 'Still Life,' and it is definitely erudite, as the description says, with many references to literature and history especially from Elizabethan England. These characters, Frederica, Stephanie, Marcus, grow on one as the story proceeds, until the riveting final chapters leave us stunned. Often overlong, I agree, and I skimmed over some philosophical and/or literary passages. Some descriptions spring to life and can be visualized. These characters, Frederica, Stephanie, Marcus, grow on one as the story proceeds, until the riveting final chapters leave us stunned. I struggled through this tedious talky novel to see how it would resolve itself, and I found the conclusion rewarding in an offbeat way. Parts of it are amusing in a dark vein. I preferred 'A Fairly Honorable Defeat.' I never identify with the female characters, oddly.I struggled through this tedious talky novel to see how it would resolve itself, and I found the conclusion rewarding in an offbeat way. The Murderbot series are favorites of mine, and Wells's fantasy novels including Witch King caught me by surprise. The imaginative details like the whale appeal to me more than the complex history and relationships. Each reader may decide!

"She saw the shiny knob-end of the rhubarb thrusting upwards upon the thick red stem, thrusting itself like a knob of flame through the soft soil." Romantic, passionate, even about vegetables, an unusual voice.

Memorable characters whose stories weave into an overarching novel. Overcoming odds against them, these people have accomplished much. Especially enjoyed the quilts story.

Using the Kindle, I jumped over several chapters as if by magic, to read the conclusion; the tedious middle chapters didn't hold me. Perhaps more imagination and less attention to real activity might have transported the voice.

Reading this brief story, you imagine the alarming experience of riding the Trans-Siberian railroad toward Vladivostok while being watched and searched by a suspicious Russian military commander. Cleverly described and suspenseful.

The story made me so eager to see what would happen that I had to leap over some characterizations ... what a powerful book, one that truly commands you to attend.

How fortunate to have a sensitive English teacher and a compassionate priest when you have a demanding mother eager to stifle your creativity!

How much enjoyment you find here will depend on how much detail about faeries you can tolerate. The tongue-in-cheek depiction of Emily the earnest academic is clever.

Way more violent than most stories, with vivid characters and a suspenseful situation; the LGBTQ+ component enhances our appreciation. Worthwhile.

As you read, you realize the moments (milestones) when a life might change, for better or worse, perhaps by a decision you make, or a force imposed upon you, and yet, life continues. Worthwhile to read this.

I am so glad I read this book! Even the final pages feel as if McPhee did not want to stop writing it, hated to stop painting just another scene of people.

Dedication is required of the reader here, as analysis after analysis of characters is presented in often dry pages of narration. As a one-time guerrilla gardener myself, I'm sympathetic, and I appreciate the crashing outcomes that the plot sets up.
