The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is a beautiful series of vignettes written from the perspective of a young girl named Esperanza. Esperanza is a free-spirited person, and sometimes that characteristic works against her. She is skeptical of social norms, which makes for some interesting commentary about her experiences. In this novel, Esperanza is introduced to the confusing reality of becoming a woman. She learns a lot about the world over the course of the story. I have read this book twice now, and both times I have loved it. I think that Sandra Cisneros is a superb author, her skills being evident in this specific piece of writing. This book is most suitable for people aged 13 and up. If you’re debating on whether or not you should read this book, let me be the one to tell you to do it. The House on Mango Street is one of the most beautiful books that I have ever read.
