A finely put together novel, about a fictional woman looking after the town library in the famous French seaside town of St. Malo during the Nazi occupation, 1939-1945. Told from Jocelyn Ferrec (the librarian's) point of view, it chronicles the many changes and challenges faced during those times. While this is a translation, from author Mario Escobar's native Spanish text, it is a seamless, well told story. Unfortunately, having read Antony Doerr's bestselling, "All the light we cannot see," recently (also set in St. Malo, during World War II), it was perhaps not as intriguing a setting as it might otherwise have been.
