Good to read a local writer and fun to wander through familiar locations, but becomes a little like an Alberta Tourist promotion after a while with all the business name dropping. Also something of an Alberta writers' guild love-in. Difficult for most writers to effectively merge fact and fiction and I have trouble when fictitious words are put in the mouth of a factual character and we don't know that without reading the appendix. I stopped reading after I met 6 years old Jasper a "guide" at Fort Edmonton. Could those eloquent, articulate lengthy paragraphs really come from the mouth of a child that young?! Maybe the offspring of university profs can do this, but it was a stretch for me. I must be out of the loop. A sense of underlying smug elitism from the author's voice that seems to pervade throughout. And what is Steve there for? He certainly isn't a romantic interest. Not much of a story line, but good to know someone is using Alberta as a back drop even if it is a very academic, middle class scenario.
