A lot of people will look at the author of this book and immediately assume that it's a horror novel. In fact, I've seen quite a few bookstores place this in their horror sections. This is a mistake. While this book does have a ghost and a kid with psychic powers, it is most certainly not meant to evoke any feeling of horror in the audience. You could say that it is more of a murder mystery, but honestly, I don't feel like even that's right. This whole book felt to me more like a coming of age story. A book where we join a young man during a difficult time in his life on his journey to adulthood. If you can get over the fact that this is not a scary or particularly thrilling story, you will be rewarded with meticulously built world, a lot of heart, and some memorable and lovable characters, all things I associate with Stephen King more than I do scares. The narrator is also very good, giving each character a unique voice so you can recognize each character before you hear who is supposed to be speaking. Though unfortunately, this fact does kind of spoil the reveal of the killer slightly before you are supposed to know.
