The summer of monkeys is a book about a struggling family and the miracle that saves them. When Jay Berry Lee is hiking through the Ozark mountains, he miraculously finds a tree full of monkeys. When he comes back home to his farm he tells the tale to his father, mother, and his crippled sister. The news was so astonishing that Jay had to tell his grandpa which is where he learns the real reason why he found them. They were wanted! No, no they didn’t rob a bank or steal something, just that they were award winning circus monkeys leaving the wanted price high enough to get his dream horse and his dream gun. Through hard work, determination, and getting tricked multiple times he manages to capture them without force but through love. After a major storm hit, the monkeys gave up and were in a horrible condition since they were circus monkeys and weren’t adapted to living in the wilderness. The next day when Jay goes hunting to try to capture the monkeys he hears a sad and injured moan. He tracks the horrible sound to a worse sight to see all the monkeys about to die. Instead of taking them back home without caring for them he comes back with a towel and dries them all off, leaving them a little more trusting. He then takes them to his house where he puts them in a comfortable cage. After the monkeys return to their home it's time for Jay to get his reward. His grandpa offers him 2 horses: a beautiful pink one but with a crippled leg or a plain pony. Jay of course picks the pink one but then tells grandpa about the crippled leg. Grandpa then says that seeing any creature crippled is horrible. Jay finally gets what he means, he returns the ponies to grandpa and then gives the money for himself, to his parents to fix his sister's leg. One reason I would recommend this book is because of how he always wanted a horse with the money from the monkeys but instead gave the money so that his sister could walk without being crippled.
