This rendition of Miss Austen’s book is the closest to the story. There are a couple of changes for which I could not account, but they don’t cause any damage to the story per se—as some other renditions have done. I’m also not crazy about Elizabeth Garvie as Elizabeth Bennet; she is very cute, but her constant dear-in-the-headlights expression was distracting at times. I also don’t think she captured Lizzie’s profound distress upon receiving the news of Lydia’s elopement—which, at that time, would have meant disgrace and social alienation to her entire family. Comparing this with the 1998 version I realize how much Colin Firth copied David Rintoul’s interpretation of Fitzwilliam Darcy! Still, an excellent story that should be watched by young women so they can understand how pampered and lucky they are.
