This writer (and/or his translator) has nearly unmatched literary skill - dozens of one-liners you want emblazoned on your memory, descriptions of battle so keen they rise to the level of 'virtual' experience. I am eager to read other work by Perez-Reverte.
However, he is so talented that this particular book is a real downer. As a war journalist, he clearly has experienced himself what he works to convey in this book. But it's a savage and hopeless message, and he repeats it again and again.
