The Pianist has many merits, but it's more like a collection of anecdotes than a story that hangs together. There are hints as to Mr. Szpilman's character, but never felt I got to know him as a person, as opposed to an appalled witness to tragedy. The Pianist is highly influenced by Polanski's own childhood memories of the Holocaust, and overall, it might have been a better film if it had been a straightforward account of his own experiences.
