A fun and heartwarming story that doesn't talk down to kids. The characters really make this book. Mr. and Mrs. Hoggett are classic children's storybook characters. Babe is funny and sensitive and tells the story that needs told.

With simple prose, this is a story about an unusual piglet. But more importantly it emphasizes the necessity of politeness, courtesy and keeping an open mind about others. It’s silly to believe that a pig could learn to act like a dog, much less a sheepdog, but the book’s matter-of-fact tone draws you in to its fairy tale premise. The black-and-white drawings use workmanlike shading and lines but they are more than able in accompanying the text. This endearing story of a good-natured and well-mannered pig is a truly charming one; you can easily see why it has endured for two decades.

Earns its place on the shelf next to Charlotte's Web. A good read-aloud.

One of my favorites! I'm reading it aloud to 1st and 2nd graders right now, it is a bit over some of their heads (word choice, sentence structure) but the majority are enjoying it. A quick read, very sweet.
