After almost 30 years, legendary talk-show host Katherine Newbury suspects she may soon be losing her spot on late-night television unless she makes a game-changing transformation. Making gender equality her goal, she impulsively hires Molly Patel, a chemical plant efficiency expert, as the first and only female on her writing staff. Molly urges her to make the show more contemporary, authentic, and personal, a move that could make Molly's career or send her back to the chemical plant for good.

Thoroughly entertaining. I'm glad I watched the movie without knowing anything about it. I noted "Emma Thompson" on the DVD cover and said, "I'm in." There were two delicious surprises for me; one during the movie, and the other after it ended. (1) Some genius cast John Lithgow in a supporting role and (2) another genius accepted the movie script from a very multi-talented writer (no spoiler alert here) who understands that in real life talented people come in all shapes and sizes and personalities and their public talent can be very different from their private personality. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this movie as much as I did, and it was such a pleasure to follow a story with characters who seemed true to themselves and who sounded like real people. Enjoy!

Couldn’t warm to the awful character, although I have always enjoyed Emma Thompson,

I found this story although topical just not written well enough for a comedy or a drama..Emma Thompson was a very dislikeable person yet alone a horrible boss and I am certain nobody would give a care about her if they worked for her..especially if she was a bitch for over 20 years...I give the 2 stars for the topic and attempt but I think they missed the boat on what could have been something different and meaningfull

Mindy Kaling wrote this with Emma Thompson in mind. It is based on her observations of comedy writing from a woman's perspective, she herself is very funny and talented. Of course Mindy also stars in this smart comedy about success; how to get it, how to keep it and what it means. I am a fan of Thompson and as woman I enjoyed this angle/ take on a career in comedy as woman and a smart woman in these times. Mindy was fabulous, I loved that she lived with her aunt and uncle in true Indian tradition and it is nice to see a fresh face!

Really enjoyed The movie and Emma Thompson. I didn’t know Mindy Kaling, she was ok, but I felt she was somewhat miscast.

Just not a big fan of Mindy K. She seems to look like she's acting. Not good chemistry for both. Could have been good but directing was sub-par.

I expected so much more from this film. The only truly funny part was a few seconds into the movie. Emma Thompson is a wonderful actress but she was absolutely not the right person for this role. Very disappointing movie.
