Set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine

Master storyteller Stephen King presents the classic #1 New York Times bestseller about a mysterious store than can sell you whatever you desire--but not without exacting a terrible price in return.

The town of Castle Rock, Maine has seen its fair share of oddities over the years, but nothing is as peculiar as the little curio shop that's just opened for business here. Its mysterious proprietor, Leland Gaunt, seems to have something for everyone out on display at Needful Things...interesting items that run the gamut from worthless to priceless. Nothing has a price tag in this place, but everything is certainly for sale. The heart's desire for any resident of Castle Rock can easily be found among the exchange for a little money and--at the specific request of Leland Gaunt--a whole lot of menace against their fellow neighbors. Everyone in town seems willing to make a deal at Needful Things, but the devil is in the details. And no one takes heed of the little sign hanging on the wall: Caveat emptor . In other words, let the buyer beware...

i was hesitant at first because i remember parts of the movie wasn't a big fan but i had to remind myself that a lot of his books film adaptations are not that great . I'm glad i read this book . I absolutely loved the characters in this book. The detail in how the tricks played on the town's people and how the turned on each other was very entertaining . over all was well worth the read.

I grew up going antiquing with my parents. Hunting all over for treasures. Going to oddities shops and meeting collectors and characters much like those in this book. Needful Things is a shop that holds anything that your heart could desire, but there is a price for that treasured collectable. Leland Gaunt, is the owner of the shop. He is very charming and always seems to have an the exact item that you are looking for in stock. His prices may be low, considering the merchandise, but Leland expects each customer to play a prank on someone else in town after their purchase. I really enjoyed this read, the characters were relatable and their actions were shocking. This was written in the early 1990's but the story does not seem dated at all. for more book suggestions visit our blog -

It took me longer to get into and read this than any other King novel. I have several excuses, reasons and theories why this is. First of all it was too long and too much like War and Peace. I could not follow all the characters and there were so many of them that none of them were developed up to Stephen K's standards. Also several of my favorite authors came out with new pieces whilst reading this one including another lackluster effort from King, Revival. So I had to set this one down to read Robbins, Palahnuik, Rice and King. Lastly I quit the Skoal, became an EBay sales mogul and oddly started sleeping through the night at about the same time. All of these have cut into my reading time as of late. But really the truth is this piece just was not up to snuff. Mayhap I have read all of King's best pieces already. Mayhap it's time to re-read them.

Not as creepy or suspenseful as some of King's other works, but still very good. Of course, even not at his best form, King is still leagues ahead of most other authors.
