Everyone deserves a great love story, but for seventeen year old Simon Spier, it's a little more complicated. He hasn't told his family or friends that he's gay, and he doesn't know the identity of the anonymous classmate that he's fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life changing.

I'm predictably always Team The Book Was Better, and this was no exception. However, when the biggest strength of a book is its winning first-person narrative voice, I get how that's going to have to change for a movie. As a teen rom com movie, this works, and I think the move toward a more formulaic approach was intentional, setting up a cute queer romance with familiar trappings. But seriously. Go read the book if you haven't already.

First love in High School when you’re gay. I’m thinking High School is a tough time to “out” yourself. The emotional minefield of High School is awkward. And even tougher when you think your friends are true blue and are not judging you on your sexual preferences but you’re character. That doesn’t, obviously, happen a lot in real life. One critic said, “we all want to see our experiences validated, to have our stories deemed significant, to feel that we are not alone and that others can identify with what we’ve gone through.” True that.

I enjoyed this movie, it had some really heartwarming moments and I found myself rooting for the main character to be accepted and supported (like every person should be). I think it also represents well what it's like to be a teenager with the extra pressures of social media. One of the things I most appreciate is that the adults in this movie give consequences to bullies, whereas I find adults in most teen movies are either not present enough or ignorant.

Charming film version of "Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda" is great for teens and for parents dealing with teens coming out. Probably an unrealistic affirmative response from the parents, and from his friends and classmates, but still well worth your time. This type of film hopefully will make it easier to deal with being Gay for young adults.

Sweet story about a high school boy coming out as gay. Really enjoyed the music (the Kinks!) and one of the teachers (Who tells herself, "I'm getting my tubes tied!" after dealing with the shenanigans of 2 students). Made me think how much harder it is for this generation of teens to have to deal with social media, on top of everything else. Worth a watch

Cute guy goes gay. It's not terrible but it's far from great. I find most romantic comedies if not all to be insipid and predictable. This holds true for this one too. Its all too cute and sweet. You can tell they are really trying too. Oh well. Give it a try and see what you think.

Simon Spier has a close knit group of family and friends, but he's keeping a large secret from everyone until a post on a local website makes him reconsider. Based off the book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli.
