It was kind of like the movies that make you say, "oh, okay" after you finish. Yes, it doesn't have a lot of ups and downs and seemed too long to be over two hours for the plot it has; but Affleck definitely delivered an exquisite, but emotionally suppressed performance. I mean, look at his half-shaven face, the dullness in his eyes and the winter jackets like an apparent weight on his shoulders. It's not a typical Hollywood movie or a blockbuster, but rather of everyday struggles and human emotions that are much needed in a world where only grand, near-fictional (if not already fictional) heroes make the cut.

I have to say I'm quite astonished by the vitriol that this film is receiving in some of these comments. Is it because the film deals in a heavy emotional dilemma that has no easy fixes or answers- and that it does it in a way that is solemn using flashbacks and humor? All I can say is that the movie is definitely touching a nerve- something which indicates the film is successful on many levels.
If you've never seen an art film or " indie " film before, you might want to skip this movie as it requires some critical thinking in watching it.
The first time that I saw this film, I felt as if it was a bit overwhelming. I left the theater puzzled as to why it got such rave reviews. My initial thoughts were that it was too long, boring, and very depressing. With that said, I decided to give it another chance, and I'm extremely glad I did. As for those wondering why I would want to subject myself to a film that I initially didn't like for a second time; it's because I like to keep an open mind. In the case of this film, I really wanted to get a better understanding of what it was all about. Having seen it again, I was better able to grasp the complexity of the characters. If you absolutely hated it, I can understand your feelings. You might, however, want to give it another chance, as in the end my verdict is that it's a masterpiece. It's not a funny film, but it's down to earth and real.

This indie film should have been titled, "Mourning by the Sea". Casey Affleck delivers a monotone performance that falls short of the nuanced delivery needed to portray the simmering tensions of a man under pressure. A script that leaves too many loose strings and lacks any sort of clever storytelling. There is little to love in this forgettable flick.

Terrible movie, do people from Boston know but cuss words? Don't let your kids watch it, if you do they will learn how to cuss you out.

This is an honest movie, but like most American films, very inward looking.

" Masterfully told and beautifully acted, Manchester By The Sea is a shattering yet graceful elegy of loss and grief. "- Phil De Semlyen

Skip this film. You won't miss anything. Gratuitous use of the f-bomb. Not needed. I kept with it, hoping it would redeem itself by the ending. Didn't happen.

This movie should have won the Oscar for Best Picture. It's an original film that I found to be truly affecting, something that is quite rare in such a cynical society. The performances were outstanding all around, and the direction is purposeful and quite masterly.
This film might not be for everyone as it demands some patience and empathy from the audience.

This movie celebrates the false gods of Hollywood so they gave it Awards and they keep talking about it. what are the false gods?
1) number one alcohol booze, is always the answer and never a problem.
2) bad relationships or no relationship, people are just objects, you don't have to have a good relationship with your wife, instead don't grow up and just get drunk with your friends that's the real relationship.
3) next if you're a parent or a guardian just don't take responsibility for your children's safety, get drunk and do stupid stuff it's more important to go after more booze and let the House burn down and your children die or
4) don't tell your nephew, no you can't have sex with your girlfriend or all your which girlfriends.
now you don't have to have a real relationship with any one of them play the field have sex with as many girlfriends as you want?
sex , adultery, fornication, that's another God of Hollywood.
6) Fake false religion the Catholic Church will be fake Christians and go through the ceremony of San we're Catholics and go through that ceremony for funeral we don't pray we don't believe it we don't need it but we'll play like that's what kind of Christian is acceptable.
7) iHowever if the mother who was terrible before if she's changed if she's become a real Christian if she's cleaned up well we won't talk about a Jesus that can forgive people and change them and
8) instead we will turn her into a fake Christian because we'll say oh she's living with her fiance that means she's having sex with him because she's living in the same house with him and we know real Christians don't have sex before marriage and
9) owe'll make him a controlling freak so that any real possible Christian is a fake Christian that's a Hollywood version of real Christianity there's no such thing as a really good bible-believing Christian from Hollywood unless there's some kind of control freak or weird person that's another God of. Fiance that means she's having sex with him because she's living in the same house with him and we know real Christians don't have sex before marriage and we'll make him a controlling freak so that any real possible Christian is a fake Christian that's a Hollywood version of real Christianity there's no such thing as a really good bible-believing Christian from Hollywood unless there's some kind of control freak or weird person that's another God of Hollywood.
The gods of Hollywood have given an award to the screenplay and the type of images that they want lifted up as being the academy of what is great and when you look at it it's terrible oh yes there is this sort of misery, but it should not be celebrated as being the great or the epitome of what human existence is about
