For fans of Marie Lu comes the first book in an epic series that bends the sci-fi genre into a new dimension.
"A truly beautiful novel that redefines the form." -- Victoria Aveyard, bestselling author of Red Queen

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she'd have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that's little more than a speck at the edge of the universe. Now with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra--who are barely even talking to each other--are forced to evacuate with a hostile warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A plague has broken out and is mutating with terrifying results; the fleet's AI may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what's really going on. As Kady hacks into a web of data to find the truth, it's clear the only person who can help her is the ex-boyfriend she  swore  she'd never speak to again.
Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents--including emails, maps, files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more-- Illuminae  is the first book in a heart-stopping trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

This book was absolutely amazing! I recommend to anyone searching for a new obsession different from anything ever read. The cover is gorgeous, and the pages are literature and art mixed to become pure perfection.

This book is awesome. I feel there aren't enough young adult sci-fi books out there, but let's all just be glad this one exists. Kaufman and Kristoff do something amazing with this book-- they tell a story as though one is reading a long file of an event that happened in space. If you flip quickly through the book, you'll see pictures, emails, reports of video clips, IMs, and some crazy pages that look like word-art. This is what makes the book so scary thick (pictures break up a lot of the text). But trust me, you'll read the whole thing in a few days, and be putting the second book Gemina (which in my honest opinion was even better than Illuminae) on hold. This is a great action book with a touch of romance, amazing characters, and great writing.

Plot wise, this book follows Kady and Ezra. When their planet is attacked, they run for their lives and end up finding refuge on a spaceship--at least for the time being. Their ship is being chased down by the crazy people who attacked their planet, and their only hope for survival is getting to a way-point before their attackers finish them off. And that's the EASY part of what they have to do, because things inevitably get worse and worse.

Long books tend to make me run away. This book would work for a reluctant reader though. Instant messaging, memos, and pictures keep the story moving at a rapid pace. Story is easy to follow also.

Storyline involves two large corporations. One has established at least one illegal settlement and mining operations. The second company decides to attack the settlement/mining operation in a hostile takeover. Two ships of survivors escape the attack with help from a military ship that hears their distress call. Survivors have to try to make it to safety in damaged ships, with one group of survivors infected by a fabricated pathogen, and a computer system that has stopped taking orders.

The body count is high with bloody descriptions that make this title most suitable for older teens and adults.

This book features a unique storyline told through hacked files from a spaceship. As the story is told through the correspondence of several characters and an AI, it can be unreliable. It is fast-paced as much of the story is direct messaging. The impending doom hanging over two runaway ships leaves the characters inside to show either their worst characteristics or their best.
