A daring young woman will risk her life to find her destiny in this atmospheric, beautifully drawn historical debut novel-a tale of love, hope, and danger set during the First World War. Lady Elizabeth Neville-Ashford wants to travel the world, pursue a career, and marry for love. But in 1914, the stifling restrictions of aristocratic British society and her mother's rigid expectations forbid Lilly from following her heart. When war breaks out, the spirited young woman seizes her chance for independence. Defying her parents, she moves to London and eventually becomes an ambulance driver in the newly formed Women's Army Auxiliary Corps-an exciting and treacherous job that takes her close to the Western Front. Assigned to a field hospital in France, Lilly is reunited with Robert Fraser, her dear brother Edward's best friend. The handsome Scottish surgeon has always encouraged Lilly's dreams. She doesn't care that Robbie grew up in poverty-she yearns for their friendly affection to become something more. Lily is the most beautiful-and forbidden-woman Robbie has ever known. Fearful for her life, he's determined to keep her safe, even if it means breaking her heart. In a world divided by class, filled with uncertainty and death, can their hope for love survive. . . or will it become another casualty of this tragic war? The paperback includes a P.S. section with additional insights from the author, background material, suggestions for further reading, and more.

An amazing story of an aristocratic lady who leaves everything behind to help with the war efforts in France during the Great War. A heartwarming tale of strength, courage, and determination.

Loved this first book by Robson. Lily and her brother are royalty but both give up their well heeled life to serve King and Country.
Dr. Fraser, Lily's love interest is a surgeon from London's poorer East End who serves as her Romeo, on the front lines.
Her research is always excellent. She included her dad's book in her bibliography. Robson dedicated the book to her dad and also interviews him at the end.
Would also highly recommend Goodnight from London.

I enjoyed this book. It is an engaging story, and a view of World War I medical efforts. Of course, there is a lovely and realistic love story in it as well as lots of other believable friendships.

A good historical novel about the WWI and its effects on society. Lady Lily Ashford longs to escape the confines of her privileged life and work to help the war effort. After some family struggles, she ends up in the WAAC stationed in France as an ambulance driver. Dr. Robbie Fraser, a school friend of her brother's, is at the same camp and the two continue their romance. What I particularly liked was learning about how restrictive life was for women in those times. Women had to make their own opportunities and work hard to achieve their goals.

This is a powerful and dramatic love story set against the backdrop of World War 1. Lady Elizabeth, quickly becoming Lilly, defies her aristocratic parents to join the war effort as an ambulance driver for the WAAC. She falls in love with a surgeon from the slums of Glasgow, and the book chronicles their love through to consummation.

The scenes of the field hospital are compellingly accurate, but the over all tone of the book does not dwell so much on the horrors of the Great War, as on the burgeoning romance between Robbie and Lily. The book brought back echoes of Lady Sybil and the early episodes of Downtyon Abbey.
