Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another...

In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon--when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach--an "outlander"--in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord...1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life ...and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Read in private when time allows

A great first book in the series! A long read but hard to put down. If you have watch the t.v. series, the book very closely matches it but the book is much better like most adapted books are. I highly recommend this read, it's funny, adventurous, emotional, sad, horrible and romantic all rolled up into one book! Enjoy!

Beautifully written with just the right amount of description and detail, this book will always be one of my favorites. Anyone who loves fantasy, romance, and/or historical fiction is sure to enjoy this book, as well as the sequels. Best of all, they turned the series into a TV show!

I have absolutely loved all of these books!! The fact that the author is from Arizona makes it even better. I have not watched the series but listening to the audio version of these books is astounding. Maybe you have already read the books, now try listening. I've listened and now I shall read the books. Wonderful books!!!

These books are wonderful. Ive read the first 4 about 3 times now the others only one. Started these books when I was Young about 17 and fell in love and still carry the heart and soul of this book with me after all these years. Jamie and Claire are an epic couple through all time!

Full disclosure: I did not finish this book. As someone who RARELY abandons novels before I finish them, that kind of tells you everything you need to know. I thought it was completely devoid of plot, and if you're here for the romance of it all, the relationship is completely abusive and made me so uncomfortable to read about. I know lots of people love the Outlander Series though, so maybe there's something else going on here that is marvelous that is completely beyond me. Not sure.

I love this series. Such a beautiful love story. A bit lengthy in description but overall worth it.

Just finished reading this novel, and I have to say, "wow!" what an adventure Claire had. A lengthy novel and at times a little too descriptive for my liking so I just skimmed over those parts. But even though I enjoyed the story, it didn't really pick up the pace until the end where the book had me wanting to read it just to see what happens next. From Claire's witch trial to Jamie's imprisonment the action kept coming! The description of Jamie's torture at the hands of Jack Randall was heart wrenching, though, and I was hoping for more of a vengeful death of him. I was happy that Jamie recovered from his injuries, mentally and physically, and the spiritual leadership given to Claire during that time was a nice added touch. I can't wait to read the next novel.

This world is well thought out. I'm glad I could insert myself into it by reading.

In book, audio or movie format Jamie and Claire are an amazing couple and one of the best love stories ever!

" Hanovers and Stuarts? To me, these were still no more than names on a chart on the schoolroom wall. What were they, compared with an unthinkable evil like Hitler's Reich? It made a difference to those who lived under the kings, I supposed, though the differences might seem trivial to me. Still, when had the right to live as one wished ever been trivial? Was a struggle to choose one's own destiny less worthwhile than the necessity to stop a great evil?"-Claire

Sexual Content: Although not explicit, there is quite a lot of sex in this book (mostly between consenting & married adults). There is one instance rape which, while not shown explicitly, may still be disturbing to some readers.

Violence: 18th century Scotland is a grimy and violent place. Claire is a healer, so sees her fair share of blood and gore. Violence is not too explicit, however, and most of the focus is on the impact of violence on those who survive it.

English nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall and husband Frank take a second honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands in 1945. When Claire walks through a cleft stone in an ancient henge, she's somehow transported to 1743. She encounters Frank's evil ancestor, British captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, and is adopted by another clan. Claire nurses young soldier James Fraser, a gallant, merry redhead, and the two begin a romance, seeing each other through many perilous, swashbuckling adventures involving Black Jack. Scenes of the Highlanders' daily life blend poignant emotions with Scottish wit and humor. Eventually Sassenach (outlander) Claire finds a chance to return to 1945, and must choose between distant memories of Frank and her happy, uncomplicated existence with Jamie.
