Another overhyped Wahlberg flick.

This is a 2013 American Afgan-war docudrama directed by Peter Berg, based on the 2007 non-fiction book of the same name by Marcus Luttrell.
Set during the war in Afghanistan, the film dramatizes the unsuccessful United States Navy SEALs counter-insurgent mission Operation Red Wings, during which a four-man SEAL reconnaissance and surveillance team was tasked to track down and kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah.
Really shocking and astounding is the re-enactment of the battles of Operation Red Wings, which is one of the most realistic depictions of the fighting.
Miraculously Marcus Luttrell is saved by some Afgan villagers, who protected him out of duty to their 2,000 year old code of honor, known as Pashtunwali.
It is a profoundly thought-provoking docudrama that will show you that war is no good at all no matter how good its cause is.

A Navy Seals team is sent to Afghanistan on a mission. Their target is the Taliban leader, and they can either kill him or capture him. They come into contact with an Afghani, who they do not kill. However, the Taliban fighters are warned of the presence of the Navy Seals, and the Navy Seals are attacked. Somehow, they must survive the firefight with the Taliban, even by killing them. After seeing so many war movies and soldier movies, I did not particularly find this one to be anything special. There is obviously a lot of violence, and the plot includes emotion to convey the terror of fighting as a soldier.

Inspiring movie. I have the most respect for these men that give up their lives for their country. Great but heartbreaking movie. 9/10.

I was actually looking for the book. The book is horrendous.

The movie on the other hand was actually pretty good. There really aren't that many military films that I enjoy, but this is one of them. The fighting scenes were long and probably not realistic in some ways, but it is a movie. The weapons, the tactics and how the team members interacted were very much realistic. I would not call this a drama though, more of an action film.

The fight scene was somewhat long and I sometimes had the impression that it was just a filmed video game, but that is likely how it happened. An excellent film.

Excellent portrayal of combat in the rugged mountains of Afghanistan when an intelligence operation goes wrong and a small group of Navy Seals are in a desperate flight for their lives.

A true account of military courage and survival, Lone Survivor is a very intense film that thrills, horrifies and also punches home the simple point that individual acts of conscience can save lives, and even change the world. Whatever your political feelings about the War in Afghanistan, remember that this happened to four young men, no doubt the brightest stars of loving families and represents the sacrifice that those who serve are willing to give for our freedom!
Due to its intensity, I do not recommend this for viewing by anyone under the age of 18 unless they are contemplating military service.

At end of movie:

The Afghan villagers who protected Marcus did so out of duty to their 2000 year old code of honor known as Pashtunwali.

Pashtunwali requires a tribe to undertake the responsibility of safeguarding an individual against his enemies and protecting him at all costs.

Marcus saved by tribal law Lokhay (from the book
Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10);

Lokhay means not only providing care and shelter, it means an unbreakable commitment to defend that wounded man to the death. And not just the death of the principal tribesman or family who made the original commitment for the giving of a pot. It means the whole damned village. Lokhay means the population of that village will fight to the last man, honor-bound to protect the individual they have invited in to share their hospitality. And this is not something to have a chitchat about when things get rough. It’s not a point of renegotiation. This is strictly nonnegotiable ... These friendly Pashtun tribesmen had decided to grant me lokhay. They were committed to defend me against the Taliban until there was no one left alive.

There is no question
a part of me will forever be
up on that Mountain, dead...
As my brothers died.
But there is a part of me that
lived because of my brothers.
Because of them, I
am still alive.
And I can never forget that
no matter how much it hurts,
how dark it gets, or
how far you fall...
