Recommended if you are interested in WWII history and capturing the atmosphere of the conditions in which people lived. I especially enjoyed the way the story went back and forth in time - so you really see how the events during the war impacted the current times.

Set in 1943, a wealthy Florentine family finds their lives in danger when Italy signs the armistice allowing the Nazis to occupy northern Italy and put Mussolini and the Fascists back in power. Bands of partisans rise up to fight the occupation. The son and youngest daughter join the underground movement and eventually convince the entire family to help with the struggle. Years later, the murder of three partisan heroes brings the past alive for the detective charged with solving the crime. The novel moves between past and present, weaving a complex and fascinating story about Italy's history while exploring the lengths people will go to save their country and loved ones.

I enjoyed this book and way it spanned the war time in Italy and then kept returning us to the present. I learned a lot about the black shirts and their terrible power during the war. It was a good read. SC

Greatly entertaining read. Stories from 1944 Florence to present day Florence are interwoven into this historical novel/whodunit.
