Tumba, Sweden. A triple homicide, all of the victims from the same family, captivates Detective Inspector Joona Linna, who demands to investigate the grisly murders -- against the wishes of the national police. The killer is at large, and it appears that the elder sister of the family escaped the carnage; it seems only a matter of time until she, too, is murdered. But where can Linna begin? The only surviving witness is an intended victim -- the boy whose mother, father, and little sister were killed before his eyes. Whoever committed the crimes intended for this boy to die: he has suffered more than one hundred knife wounds and Lapsed into a state of shock. He's in no condition to be questioned. Desperate for information, Linna sees one mode of recourse: hypnotism. He enlists Dr. Erik Maria Bark to mesmerize the boy, hoping to discover the killer through his eyes. It's the sort of work that Bark had sworn he would never do again-ethically dubious and psychically scarring. When he breaks his promise and hypnotizes the victim, a Long and terrifying chain of events begins to unfurl.

The Hypnotist was a really good read, it was just incredibly long and sometimes, I just don't got time for that. Nonetheless, it was really good with a super thick plotline that kept me wanting to read more by each chapter. Swedish writer Lars Kepler investigated some dark themes with lots of reality, which was really enjoyable for me. I would recommend it if you have a lot of time on your hands.

Best seller in France, Germany.. blah, blah, blah. I usually give a story time to develop but, after fifty pages I gave up on this one. An unnecessarily horrific murder to begin with- the five year old girl is cut in half? Then flashbacks occur in the middle of the narrative leaving me confused at first, then annoyed afterwards. Interaction between characters is stilted and just weird. Perhaps a bad translation? Yuk.

Overwhelmingly disappointing. The beginning 100 pages were really good, but always left me wanting more. Flashback was the best part. Characters were not the least bit interesting. Story was choppy, dead ends and inconsistent too many times for a crime novel. The only thing I enjoyed was the short chapters. Im not sure if it was the suspense that made me finish in only 4 sittings, or just trying to see what the author(s) are trying to do.
Don't bother, overhyped, spend your time on something else.

Mystery thriller about a hypnotist who hypnotizes a young boy and unleashes a torrent of mayhem. Nothing revelatory here.

I completely fail to understand all of the praise/prizes heaped on this book. It felt to me that the authors simply threw in every "action" element that is supposed to be in a best-selling thriller (insane serial killer, kidnapping of an ill child, cult activity, infidelity, etc...) with no attempt at a coherent plot. I ended up skimming through most of the book just to find out the plot without having to endure the one-dimensional characters, dark sexual violence and a ridiculous Christmas-themed plot resolution. The "flashback" section was somewhat readable, leading me to wonder if this is less a collaboration than two authors contributing different sections of the novel, of very different quality. This is supposedly the first book in a series, but the "lead" detective is a weak, uninteresting character whom I have no desire to read about again.

Tedious. Tried for 140 pages and just couldn't read any more. So many books, so little time, so little reason to read this one

A long book, too long. Too much detours, too much dead ends. You can almost see that this is a book written by two authors. Not always a good thing. Very average if not flat out disappointing .

If you are a fan of a book like "Blue Monday" by Nicci French, - this book- is absolutely for you. The composition seems to me a little inadequate, as if there are a few plots that do not have fit ending. The stories seems as if broken. Also the part of story that is in the second half could be put at the beginning. And, well, the ending - is too much.

A decent read overall, though it seems the authors started writing one book and then decided to switch tacks partway through and write another. Twists and turns are expected, though I would have liked greater focus and plot continuity.
