I thought this book was well written and amusing. "Pigeon" is a real character! For whatever reason, though, my three year old just didn't get into it. So I can't give it 5 stars.

The latest installment in the Mo Willems series starring Pigeon will not disappoint children of any age! Though they may be targeted at a younger audience I have even gotten laughs when reading these books to 'tweens'. Mo Willems is a comic genius. Hilariously priceless character!

Pigeon is like a kid you might know, he hates to take a bath! The Pigeon needs a little help from his friends, who buzz on by and let him know he smells to bad for the flies. What does Pigeon do? I won't tell but it is very silly and you might just laugh along until the end!!

After a two-year hiatus, Mo Willems's pigeon has returned to bookstore shelves...and he's filthy! Regardless, readers young and old will welcome him back to story time in this humourous and interactive tale. As per the usual "pigeon book" routine, the bus driver opens the story by asking readers for help in persuading the pigeon to take a bath. Though covered in dirt, the stubborn pigeon resists, glaring at readers and questioning their hygiene: “YEAH! When was the last time YOU had a bath?!” A clever beat of a pause allows children to supply the answer before the pigeon replies, “Oh.”

A trio of flies that finds him repulsive finally convinces the pigeon to wash. One spread with 29 separate panels depicts the pigeon adjusting the bath (“Too wet!…Too cold.…Too reflective”) before the page turn reveals him jumping in with a “SPLASH!” Not surprisingly, the bath is ultimately fun, though perhaps not as fun as reading the book.

The Pigeon is back, and boy does he need a bath. His lovely blue is dusted with brown, and he smells to the point where even the flies run away. Problem is...he does not want a bath.

So begins his characteristic neurotic rant, and it is as funny as ever. Wild expressions, flapping wings, and that one eye says it all as he energetically expresses his opinions. At one point he even engages the reader when he asks about the last bath we took, and then he responds to our answer. After a while his stance shifts. A page filled with row on row of images shows him preparing the tub, and being very picky about it too. Like any kid though, once in the water, it is all play.

Willems perfectly uses the page layout to create a pacing that delivers the greatest impact for his silly pigeons rants. Like the other books in the series, this one begs to be read aloud amongst a group of kids. The endpapers cleverly depict the reason for the Pigeons muddy state, as well as his further fun in the tub. It seems the problem now is not how to get him in the bath, but how to get him out.

The pigeon is back and he needs a bath-- you know where this is going, and possibly how it ends, but it's fun getting there!
