The Dog Star, Sirius, is tried - and found guilty - by his heavenly peers for a murder he did not commit. His sentence: to live on the planet Earth until he can carry out a seemingly impossible mission - the recovery of a deadly weapon known as the Zoi. The first lesson Sirius learns in his lowly earthly form is that humans have all the power. The second is that even though his young mistress loves him, she can't protect either of them. The third - and worst - is that someone out there will do anything to keep Sirius from finding the Zoi. Even if it means destroying Earth itself. This funny, heartbreaking, stunning book features an introduction by Neil Gaiman, an avid fan of Diana Wynne Jones.

I finished reading this sitting in the back garden, and a strange but friendly dog came up to the gate to say hello. Because this is my life, apparently . . .

Read this when I was a teen. So imaginative and entertaining by a master author, Diana Wynne Jones.

Wonderfully imagined from a dog's point of view and especially enjoyable if you've ever had a dog. The way my cats act, it's not hard to believe that a fiery Luminary could inhabit one of them. Good thing a Zoi is out of their reach...

The trouble with humans is that it’s all or nothing with them. They seem to think anything impossible could happen in the old days. And just because these are new days, they tell you none of it is true.

Sirius had to wait till she had finished and curled up again. Then she said, "The trouble with humans is that it's all or nothing with them. They seem to think anything impossible could happen in the old days. And just because these are new days, they tell you none of it is true. Now I'm going to sleep."
