The story line was banal and the ending was predictable. The writing was good enough to keep the reader entranced and turning the page. But overall, it is like a bad scene at a dinner party a guest wants to shake off and forget even while writing the thank you note for a gracious evening.
An absolutely fabulous historical fiction novel. I loved it so much I bought it. It has everything: destructive friendships, a sexy hero, and a tragedy just waiting to happen.
Nice juicy beach read. It's well paced, has good plot twists and is not as florid as some of the author's other romance novels.
Good beach book
This was a really fun book and would make an excellent vacation read. It's about a bunch of New England socialites, and the heroine is Lily Dane who, while summering in Rhode Island in 1938, encounters her former best friend and former fiance, who are recently married. The chapters alternate between the events of that summer of 38, and the events of the fall of 1931, when Lily and Nick (the former fiance) first met. The events of both years are equally compelling, and this one is hard to put down. Family secrets, star-crossed lovers, and all with the glamour of 1930s style. Enjoyed every minute of this one, and would recommend it for anyone looking for a light, fun read.
Really liked this book - raced through it to see what would happen, a real page-turner. Did find myself getting annoyed with how naive the heroine was, and refusal to see anything beyond what was told / shown her. Like this writer though!
I enjoyed this book and it read quickly. Based on the great hurricane of Connecticut of 1938, the author made a great effort of depicting the life of the well-to-do before and after the great crash of 1929 as they spend their summers in their summer retreats by the sea. The two main characters, Nick and Lily, are quite endearing. A good love story.
This book takes place in 1932 and 1938 alternating between these two years. The main protagonists are Budgie and Lily two close friends living on the upper east side of NY and summering in New England. A love triangle develops between them and a handsome young man named Nick Greenwald. It's a great beach read full of romance, intrigue and the famous hurricane of 1938 that destroyed a whole beach community in New England. I have already read the Secret Life of Violet Grant by the same author, Beatriz Williams, and I want to read her other book, Overseas in the near future. She is a very good writer.
This is a book that doesn't tax the reader with either the storyline or the characters. It is the perfect vacation or beach read.
Loved it...absolutely loved it. Not only did I learn about an new author, I found a new topic to research. This book was inspired from Super storm Sandy. It is however about the 1938 hurricane that devastated New England. In it is a love story with racism, distorted friendships, secrets, and lies. Once you think you figured it out Beatriz has more twists for you. Great book.
