In the debut crime novel from the Booker Prize-winning author, a Dublin pathologist follows the corpse of a mysterious woman into the heart of a conspiracy among the city's high Catholic society. It's not the dead that seem strange to Quirke. It's the living. One night, after a few drinks at an office party, Quirke shuffles down into the morgue where he works and finds his brother-in-law, Malachy, altering a file he has no business even reading...

I've both read B.Black and got the audio CD of another of his books. Reading is by far my preferred alternative (even though normally I would rather hear it).

Much of the mood, which is a good portion of the essence of a Quirke novel, is given away to another's interpretation when you listen to it.

Suffice it to say that Timothy Dalton, sadly, missed the mark by a good distance with his rendition of the book.

There's so much cliché and stereotypes in this book, not much story, lots of living in the (sad) past, family secrets and characters that one just doesn't get to know well that this book missed the mark for me.
It's kind of sad; this book should have been better. It has the elements to be so: a brusque pathologist with a sad past, family secrets, a mystery, the rich & the poor, ambience. Yet it didn't come together, sadly.

This great crime novel stars Garret Quirke, a Dublin pathologist who was adopted out of an orphanage as a young boy by a leading Dublin judge. He has grown up with the Judge's own son and the two married sisters from Boston. Quirke's wife, Delia, died in childbirth 20 years ago.
Now Quirke discovers that his adopted brother has falsified a record for another young woman who has died giving birth and this sets him off on a quest for the truth that leads to other deaths, beatings, and back to Boston.
