" The Last Word is Raymond Chandler meets Arrested Development . Zany, witty, and full of dark surprises, Lisa Lutz's novel is pure fun--and Izzy Spellman, PI, tops the list of 'Fictional Characters I'd Like to Meet for a Bourbon.'"--Gillian Flynn, New York Times bestselling author of Gone Girl

The sixth installment of the critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling, Edgar- and Macavity-nominated and Alex Award-winning series by Lisa Lutz, finds our intrepid heroine of the series, Isabel Spellman, PI, at a crossroads. Izzy is used to being followed, extorted, and questioned--all occupational hazards of working at her family's firm, Spellman Investigations. Her little sister, Rae, once tailed Izzy for weeks on end to discover the identity of Izzy's boyfriend. Her mother, Olivia, once blackmailed Izzy with photo#65533;graphic evidence of Prom Night 1994. It seemed that Spellman vigilance would dis#65533;sipate after Izzy was fired for breaching client confidentiality, but then Izzy avenged her dismissal by staging a hostile takeover of the company. She should have known better than to think she could put such she#65533;nanigans behind her.

In The Last Word , Izzy's troubles are just beginning. After her takeover of Spellman Investigations, her employees are the fur#65533;thest thing from collegial...and Izzy finds herself struggling to pay the bills. But when she is accused of embezzling from a former client, the ridiculously wealthy Mr. Slayter, the stakes become immense. If Izzy gets indicted, she could lose her PI license and the Spellman family's livelihood, not to mention her own freedom. Is this the end of Izzy Spellman, PI?

The Last Word is, hands down, the most powerful book in the bestselling, award-nominated Spellman series.

This book was not for me although I can see the appeal for somebody wanting a light read. A little too much kibbutzing and tongue in cheek commentary and not enough story. To me the characters were too contrived and stereotypical and not enough reality. Chaucun a son goute.

This was such a good book. It's tremendously sad to see this great series coming to an end.

I have loved each and every one of these case files... I hope that the title doesn't mean this is the end of the series. I love all the quirky characters and hope that 35 year old Isabel Spellman never grows up! This detective family has had their share of ups and downs! In this title, Izzy's boss is trying to hide his memory loss and her parents are hiding something from the family. Everyone's trying to pull the wool over everyone's eyes and deceit is the key to the plot. Good thing Izzy and her family are on the case!

I usually count on Lisa Lutz for a light-hearted read. Not so much this time around, as personal circumstances cast a pall on the Spellman family. Still good, just not unrelievedly comic in tone.

I really loved the characters in this book, although I found it a bit tamer that previous Spellman novels. Perhaps because Izzy seems to be maturing somewhat, as is evidenced by her relationships with Mr. Slayter and with Henry Stone, though who knows what the future holds. I found Mr Slayter and Charlie to be delightful. It will be interesting to see if Izzy and Max someday make a connection. Somehow I don't believe this is 'the last word' in the Spellman series.

Isabel Spellman has worked at her family's firm, Spellman Investigations, for as long as she can remember. Having recently been fired, a wealthy client and benefactor aids her in gaining purchase of her siblings shares of the business, thus putting her in the position of power. This takeover does not sit well with her parents, who stage a rebellion of sorts; showing up for work in PJ's, boxers, etc, or not showing up at all. She should have expected a backlash. As she struggles to keep the business afloat, but her parents are acting so strange she fears they are headed for divorce and her father's eventual illness causes her to confront his mortality. Realizing she is not cut out to totally run the business, sister Rae steps back into the picture to help manage the business. Izzy is suspicious of everything involving family at this point, but has no choice.
In the process of doing a job for her benefactor, Mr. Slayter, an endearing relationship develops between the two. Feeling beholden to him, Izzy helps keep the fact that he has Alzheimer's from becoming public knowledge in order to protect his business and reputation. But someone else is out to destroy it by embezzling funds and shifting the blame to Izzy. Izzy must find the culprit before the FBI closes in and she loses the family business.
