"One of my favorites of Pym's novels, it turns a shrewd, mocking, but always affectionate eye on English country life 30 years ago. Pym's fans will feel completely at home when they step into the Jane Austen-like lives of Harriet and Belinda Bede."- Christian Science Monitor

This was a tedious read, and I am a great fan of Pym. The characters are a bit stilted and they keep on being stilted in the same way throughout the whole book. Unlike, for example, her excellent Excellent Women, or any of her other ones. I am glad that the first book I read of Pym's was Quartet in Autumn, which I think is her best. Those 4 characters! No one like them! If this one was the first book I had read, I would not have continued with her other books, which would have been a total shame.

This book is more tedious reading than any of Pym's other novels which I have read. The setting around life in a rural English church with insipid characters (well drawn by the author of course) kept me wondering 'when is something going to happen'. But of course that is the point. And there is that flavour of latent feminism in the middle age, well off spinsters. It is a wonderful comment on Edwardian mores and a society coming out of its classist straight-hold.

Two middle-aged spinsters, one suffering unrequited love for the town's pompous vicar, the other always falling for the new curate. A charming portrait of an English village and its truly lovable eccentrics.

I have just re-read this wonderful novel. Barbara Pym's books never disappoint.
