Evvy Hoffmeister is thirteen years old when her family brings her to Loon Lake Sanatorium to get cured of tuberculosis (TB). Evvy is frightened by her new surroundings; the rules to abide are harsh and the nurses equally rigid. But Evvy soon falls into step with the other girls in her ward. There's Sarah, quiet but thoughtful; Pearl, who adores Hollywood glamour; and Dina, whose harshness conceals a deep strength. Together, the girls brave the difficult daily routines. Set in 1940 at a time of political unrest throughout the U.S. and Europe, this thought-provoking novel sheds light on a much-feared worldwide illness. Hundreds of thousands of people died each year of TB, and many ill children were sent away to sanatoriums to hopefully recover.

This is a masterful novel--both eloquent and moving--that gives voice to those who fought hard to overcome the illness.

The book “Breathing room” has a powerful message of how kids and young adults feel having a serious disease called Tuberculosis. This book leaves you in tears after the other girls die. The photographs included before each chapter are amazing! I loved how the author of the book, Marsha Marsha, made only one of the nurses to be the nicest one but then sadly gets sick. I recommend reading this book, it is wonderful and full of love for the girls.
I also enjoyed how the main character, Evelyn, was telling the reader about how she felt and what happens when someone is sick with the disease. Staying away from your family, and loved ones and having strict rules. Wonderful book!

This book is amazing. I really enjoyed it. I want to read it over and over again. The book inspired me to study more about tuberculosis too! It may give you lots of chill, tears, laughter, joy... All the characters are someone you would fall in love with and miss them afterwards.

I love historical novels and I thought that this one was especially good because it was a fresh perspective (a girl in a sanatorium with tuberculosis). Also, I really liked all the bold photographs included before each chapter.
