"On a wheat farm in the era of both Dorothy and the Dust Bowl, a young boy has to give up a pet mouse because it threatens his family's harvest. While the setting of this book is realistic, the story takes a fantastical turn not far in and from there is filled with surprise and delight. (As the title and cover give away, very small elephants are a part of the fantasy... but we'd rather not spoil the story any further.) Those who enjoy extravagantly detailed and whimsical artwork, especially fans of author Graeme Base's earlier books Animalia and The Eleventh Hour, will be delighted by the interesting visual tidbits in Little Elephants, which Kirkus Reviews describes as 'an offbeat and winning mix of earthiness and enchantment.'" A fantastical tale with wonderful artwork. The pieces of the story jump from random place to place, nevertheless it is charming.
