Former academic Arthur Opp weighs 550 pounds and hasn't left his rambling Brooklyn home in a decade. Twenty miles away in Yonkers, seventeen-year-old Kel Keller navigates life as the poor kid in a rich school and pins his hopes on what seems like a promising baseball career. The link between this unlikely pair is Kel's mother, Charlene, a former student of Arthur's. After nearly two decades of silence, it is Charlene's unexpected phone call to Arthur that jostles them into action.

Heft is certainly inventive, both in its characters and its premise. Liz Moore made me care about these odd-duck personalities. For all their baggage, they're pretty good human beings who maintain a hopeful outlook on life. And Moore gives us plenty of reason to be hopeful for them, despite the challenges they have yet to overcome. In Heft, we get an unvarnished look into the thoughts of Arthur, a 550-pound recluse, and Kel, a neglected teen on the precipice of a severe downward spiral. Cleverly connecting them throughout the book, Moore leads us to their meeting point. Herein lies my primary complaint with the book: While I'm glad Moore didn't give readers a tidy little ending, the conclusion was a little too abrupt and unsatisfying after the emotional commitment I'd made to the characters. There's still lots to like about this book -- not the least of which is Yolanda, who made me smile over and over. Everyone should have a Yolanda in his or her life. That's one cool girl.
