In the parish of St. Bruno, sex is easy, corruption festers, and double-dealing is a way of life. Rene Shade is an uncompromising detective swimming in a sea of filth. As Shade takes on hit men, porn kings, a gang of ex-cons, and the ghosts of his own checkered past, Woodrell's three novels pit long-entrenched criminals against the hard line of the law, brother against brother, and two vastly different sons against a long-absent father.

I really enjoyed these stories - they are gritty and steamy (from the southern sun) and you can feel the muggy heat of Louisiana. They are written of a time past, but not so long ago that most of us don't remember. The writing and plots are not for the faint of heart, but were really well done. Also, this has one of the best narrators I've heard - that always makes a big difference with audio books! *** Spoiler *** I wish that someone had noticed that John X was taken by Lunch - not that he should have been saved, just Etta noticing that Lunch was in town would have been enough. But that was the only thing I would have changed.
