I started this, as I really knew so little about Marie Antoinette aside from movies which have basically used her as a prop to spend vast amounts of time and money on costuming a "spoiled brat" & not much on research to get to the bottom of who she really was. Titled women were a pawn in even this, the dawning of the Age of Reason, to marry off to form political alliances. This book, even tho historical fiction, helps one to better understand how this rather charming young lady was transformed, thru braces on her teeth to French elocution & a French hair stylist, to transform her into the French dauphine (heir to the throne's bride). She is truly a sympathetic character, which is why the sequel comes so much of a surprise.

A good, if sometimes tedious piece of historical fiction about the young Marie Antoinette. Her background and upbringing as a Hapsburg princess enabled her Mother, Empress Maria, to marry her off to the Prince of France--all for political reasons. There is a sequel that I'd like to read since this title ends when Marie and Louis become King and Queen upon the death of Louis the 15th.

A nice change from your normal MA book, it focuses on the time before she became queen, exploring her relationship with her mother & siblings.1st book of a series, looking forward to the sequel due out this summer

I chose to read this book based on the numerous quotes found on the front and back covers, most of which were written by my favourite historical fiction authors. I was not disappointed. This is the first of a trilogy and it focusses on the evolution of Maria Antonia to Marie Antoinette. I can't wait to read the second book due out summer 2012!

Wow. I didn't expect it to be awesome. But I was always looking forward to reading more of it. The first few pages or so are okay, but once you get a few chapters into it... It sorta sucks you in and you really get into it. I might not be making much sense, but... ;) In other words, I really really liked this book.
