Meet Yumi Fuller. A Japanese American prodigal daughter, Yumi (aka Yummy) is returning home to the Idaho potato farm she ran away from twenty-five years earlier. Then a freewheeling hippie chick, Yumi is now a fairly responsible parent and a professor with a side gig selling lava lots in Hawaii. But can she possibly be prepared to face her dying father, her Alzheimer's-devastated mother, and Cass, the best friend she left behind? And there's the former lover whose agribusiness client has banished him to Idaho, where he lands in the small-town community he once offended and in Yumi's life.

It will take a while before I can fully reconcile my feelings about this book. The writing is excellent and the story is engaging. As always, Ozeki took me to places I'd never explored and drew a world so vivid that I was able to truly inhabit the story.

The teenage son's dismissive attitude towards his mother was oddly reassuring (as I struggle with my own's sons attitude filled with condescension and contempt). The main character was such a flawed, generally unlikeable person that she made the story work. This is not a happy book, though there are moments of levity and sweetness. Broken families are difficult to watch, and being the bystander to someone else's repeated heartbreak and missteps can be agonizing.
