Traumatised by an accident which involves something falling from the sky and leaving him eight and a half million pounds richer, our hero spends his time and money obsessively reconstructing and re-enacting memories and situations from his past: a large building with piano music in the distance, the familiar smells and sounds of liver frying and spluttering, lethargic cats lounging on roofs until they tumble off them ... But , when this fails to quench his thirst for authenticity, he starts reconstructing more and more violent events, including hold-ups and shoot-outs.

Man receives large settlement after being hit by random detritus from passing aircraft and then proceeds to use this windfall to attempt to recreate moments of deja vu or glimpses of alternate reality? It is never quite clear... A book unlike no other that for some reason I cannot elucidate strikes me deeply and personally. Not a book full of emotion but more a work of conceptual art. I read and reread this work and always find it gripping yet elusive.

I thought the first half of the book describing the journey of someone recovering from major head trauma fascinating, but the book dragged on too long and veered into the surreal after a point.

Excellent premise, however the story became very transparent and predictable quickly. Kind of like having appetizers, but no dinner.

One of the most original novels I have read in a long time. Recommend it highly.
