"Dick, I need a war." Nicolas Creel is a man on a mission. He heads up the world's largest defense contractor, The Ares Corporation. He's retained Dick Pender to "perception manage" his company to even more riches by manipulating world conflicts. However, Creel may have an even grander plan in mind. Shaw (no first name), a man with a truly unique past, travels the world reluctantly doing the bidding of a secret multi-national intelligence agency in order to keep the world at peace--and safe. Katie James, a journalist who will do anything to get back to the top of her profession, has just gotten the break of a lifetime, the chance to interview the sole survivor of a massacre that has left citizens around the world stunned.

A 'thriller' with a lot of moments of coincidence and absurdity. If you like Ron McClarty's narration he makes this silly bit of indulgence tolerable. Baldacci 'jumps a few sharks' in this book as he tries his best to create another convoluted world-threatening disaster.

Still, if you can get past some of the cheesy dialogue and imagery ("...he thought he could see Anna's face in the darkened sky and imagined her looking down at him...") then it's an evenly paced ride.

What a great story!! A lot going on in the beginning made it a bit hard to follow, but once it hit its stride, it was hard to stop listening. Intrigue and suspense keep you wondering what will happen next. Definitely 9 out of 10 for me--if simply for the awesome conclusion that Baldacci gives this story! Narration by Ron McLarty made the story an enjoyable listen!

The second half of this novel is by far more exciting and interesting. Therefore, 9 of 10 stars.
