"A strong . . . new trilogy, invoking just a little Harry Potter and Series of Unfortunate Events along the way."-- Realms of Fantasy

Siblings Kate, Michael, and Emma have been in one orphanage after another for the last ten years, passed along like lost baggage.

Yet these unwanted children are more remarkable than they could possibly imagine. Ripped from their parents as babies, they are being protected from a horrible evil of devastating power, an evil they know nothing about.

Until now.

Before long, Kate, Michael, and Emma are on a journey through time to dangerous and secret corners of the world . . . a journey of allies and enemies, of magic and mayhem. And--if an ancient prophesy is true--what they do can change history, and it's up to them to set things right.

"A new Narnia for the tween set."-- The New York Times

"[A] fast-paced, fully imagined fantasy."-- Publishers Weekly

"Echoes of other popular fantasy series, from "Harry Potter" to the "Narnia" books, are easily found, but debut author Stephens has created a new and appealing read . . ."-- School Library Journal , Starred Review

I read the whole Books of the Beginning trilogy, and it was one of the best series books I've ever read!

Although it took me a while to get into the story, once the adventure had truly started, I found that I was taken with Kate's strength, Michael's dedication, and Emma's spunk.

The night Kate's mother disappeared she asked one thing of her daughter. Take care of your brother and sister. Kate promised she would and then her world changed forever. Left alone without even a memory of their own last name Kate, Michael and Emma are passed from one orphanage to the next finally landing in the Edgar Allan Poe Home for Hopeless and Incorrigible Orphans. And they are kind of incorrigible but, you know, in a good way. Michael is obsessed with dwarves and adventure and is constantly poking his nose into holes checking for possible dwarf artifacts. People often think he's crazy. Emma is busy picking fights with everyone she meets which frequently includes her brother because he irritates her. Everyone irritates her. Kate definitely has her hands full.
The day comes when they prove to be too incorrigible for the Incorrigible Orphans home and they get sent to dank, dark and depressing Cambridge Falls. What they notice immediately is that there are no children anywhere. Not even in their new orphanage run by the mysterious Dr. Pym. As they explore their crusty new home they discover an old green book that has the ability to send people back in time. They find this out by accidentally sending themselves 15 years into the past and right into the middle of a fantastic adventure.
There's mystery, drama, dwarves (happy Michael), crazy sorceresses, adventure and even a lot of laughs in this well constructed page turning fantasy. Luckily it is the first of a trilogy of books with Katherine, Michael and Emma. If you have Harry Potter fans you might want to point them in the direction of John Stephens' The Emerald Atlas. And the audio version, read by Jim Dale, is phenomenal!

My husband and I just listed to this on a long drive we did, and we both really enjoyed it. We have another trip coming up next week (to do shows at libraries in Iowa for National Library Week ) and will listen to the next book. Interesting characters, good plot and so well read. It makes fun listening and would be very appealing for a family trip.
