beautiful absurdity that trusts in the intelligence of children and their ability to appreciate language

This was a funny book! The video was very good, too

Really fun book: I never thought I'd see a 3 year old saying "haberdashery" and "despondent!"

My 4 year old daughter LOVES this book, and so do I. I read it to her quite a bit. Its.... jazzy. Its got *panache*. Both the story and the illustrations are unexpected. I just wish I could sing better so that my older kids wouldn't cover their ears every time I get to the mezzo-soprano's song!

You gotta love Lemony Snicket. Who else would write a picture book for young kids introducing words like "mezzo-soprano" and "panache"? The illustrations by Maira Kalman are perfectly, wonderfully matched to his story, and open up such a great opportunity for imagination and creativity to take hold for the reader or young listener. If I still had little ones at home this would be on our favorites shelf!

Love this book and so does my nearly 2 year old daughter. Totally different to any other children's book I have come across. It's unexpected, and a little surreal in places. Great choice of words like haberdashery and despondent. Very cool.

Wasn't impressed. I can't think of any child that would like this book read to them. It's just 13 random words crammed into a storyline. I love Lemony Snicket but maybe he should stick to chapter books.
