Eli walks alone in post-apocalyptic America. He heads west along the Highway of Death on a mission he doesn't fully understand but knows he must complete. In his backpack is the last copy of a book that could become the wellspring of a revived society. Or in the wrong hands, the hammer of a despot. Eli keeps his blade sharp and his survival instincts sharper as his quest thrusts him into a savage wasteland.

Spoiler: The book is the Bible! An unwieldy mix of post-apocalyptic action, western, wandering samurai film, and religious allegory. Denzel Washington plays the title character (Eli, not the book), a blind warrior in a bleak, brutal wasteland who has a rare copy of the Bible. For some reason, evil Gary Oldman (hammy it up enjoyably) wants the book. The action's pretty good, but the look and feel of the film is overly familiar ("Mad Max," "The Road," Kurosawa, Leone) and it can be rather ponderous. The supporting cast features MIla Kunis, Tom Waits, Jennifer "Flashdance" Beals, and Malcolm McDowell. Directed by the Hughes Brothers, who started their career with "Menace II Society." Hey, it's better than "The Postman."

Moving and well-done futuristic story. Denzel Washington's portrayal of Eli was very good.

This is a 2010 American post-apocalyptic fantasy directed by the Hughes brothers.
The story revolves around Eli, a nomad in a post-apocalyptic world, who is told by a voice to deliver his copy of a mysterious book to a safe location on the West Coast of the United States.
The history of the post-war world is explained along the way, as is the importance of Eli's task.
Even after viewing the film, I still don't understand why only one copy of the mysteruious book has been left intact and why this mysterious book caused the war in the first place.

It was just not my type of movie; a bore as well as tiring to watch. Therefore, I didn't finish watching it.

This movie is plodding, and very slow, meditative even, in its pacing. The story is developed well, and all the acting is very good. The movie is intriguing in the execution of its concept, because it seems to play with both sides of its controversial idea. I've heard this called a post-apocalyptic bible thumper, but I don't buy it. This movie feels like a stealth parody in the vein of Verhoven's 'Starship Troopers'. Of course, if you didn't get the critique there, you probably won't get it here either.

Really not worth the wait. A post apocalyptic bible thumper? Like it matters.
There is one excellent fight scene in the bar. Heads will roll.
The cinematography is well done and I enjoyed the tint of the color that was used.
Otherwise, a real bore. I had no investment in the characters goal or the motivations of the vilians.
Its a stinker.

Really enjoyed the world as well as the twist at the end. The movie was engrossing even with a mostly slow burn. Very nice.

While the graphic panoramas of post apocalypse America were mesmerizing, I found it hard to believe that a man who remembered every word of the Bible would kill his way across the continent.
Practise what you preach, buddy!
