What a terrible example to set for children! Jack and his mother live in poverty, owning only a spinning wheel, threadbare quilt, pitted ax, and box of matches. They have no food in the cupboard and no money. Yet Jack trades his quilt and ax to make a cake to take to the princesses birthday party. Even worse, Jack loses the cake, piece by piece along the way, so that he only has a story to present to the princess. And what's his reward? Friendship and the opportunity to cut the princesses real birthday cake! No financial support; no restitution for what was lost. The king doesn't even seem to care for his subjects as there is only one bridge across the river, manned by a troll who demands a 50% tax. I was disappointed with the ending because Jack basically ends up worse off than before.
Besides all this, I don't like the art. It looks childish but without the necessary whimsy. The story is quite long.

Read this book in class and met the author a few days later...it's a cute, silly read, very predictable. Fleming's real strength is in youth biography.

It's a long story (best for preschoolers) but it's very engaging.
