In honor of his newly created religion, Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy renounces his title, property, and family in favor of poverty and celibacy. For the Countess Sofya, his wife of nearly fifty years, this is the last straw! After she discovers his plans to leave the rights to his iconic novels to the Russian people rather than his own family, she decides to use every trick of seduction in her considerable arsenal, to fight for what she believes is rightfully hers.

A historical drama worth checking out.
The acting by Plummer and Mirren is exceptional. Some of the other character-developments seemed forced or contrived. The time on them was wasted and caused the story to drag for me. The love story is the only story here.
I think I would rather have had time spent on her battles after his death -- more interesting.
I rate it medium because it has the potential for more that was missed. Overall, enjoyable.

I loved the drama and the cantankerous arguing between the couple. Filming had a poetic feel which was enjoyable. Interesting sound effects.

Utterly awful. Overacted and poorly written. A waste of some wonderful talents like Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer. If you want to learn about Tolstoy read his magnificent novels.

Didn't know anything about Tolstoy so I found it interesting and the actors were top notch.

Does "No items requestable" mean that the library will not hold DVDs?

Ah...love. I realize we all have to live our lives (church-state-lover-friend-foe) but it made me wonder just how much one could do without the constant distractions of every one around them.

This is an interesting account of the fame and fortune of Tolstoys life in a time when all he was concerned about was his work. His wife reminds us that women are chattel but her smarts, and craziness, show us the struggle of fame during this time in history.
Excellent performances by all, but this movies is a little slow.
