The last book in an eight-book series, so it's gonna be exciting, right? Page after page of action, plot twists and witty dialog? Yeah, not so much.
Anyone who's been following my journey through this series knows that I've been mostly unimpressed. The dialog has been stilted, the action hasn't really been there, and none of the plot has seemed to be leading anywhere. Yes, the bad guys have been (kinda sorta) working towards bringing Harken, the evil sorcerer, back - but for what reason? To get rid of the good endowed children? They could have done that themselves. Money? Power? They never really say, and are actually surprised when Harken says he plans on taking the city back into the past with him.
The main character, Charlie Bone, should be the hero of the story, but he rarely does anything heroic; he often ends up needing to be saved - usually by Tancred or Lysander. And those two (and so many of the endowed) alternate between being super powerful and completely ineffective.
Comments specifically about this eighth book:
The Bloors have been looking all over for the box that has the secret will, the box that Billy Raven's father entrusted to Charlie's father. They even ransack Charlie's family home. But when Lyell Bone finally reveals its hiding place, it's one of the first places they should have looked. (That's another complaint about the series: the Bloors are some of the stupidest, most ineffective villains I've ever seen.)
The hidden will, we've been told, will prove that Billy Raven is the true heir to the Bloor fortune. Billy, an orphan who has had a terrible life, will finally have something good happen. Except when the will is found, we discover that the true heir is not deserving Billy, but someone else. (I'd say who, but don't want to spoil the ending.)
I have numerous other issues with the series, and with this last book, but I'll just say this - the story had a lot of potential, possibly even the potential to be as good as the series it's constantly compared to, but it is far from being another Harry Potter.
I've read the castle of mirrors in 2 days, and the hidden king in 3 and a half days, and the wilderness wolf in 4 days, and I'm so excited to finish the shadow of badlock to read Charlie bone and the red knight!!
its the best book ever next to harry potter
Best book ever (next to harry potter) It is a great read.
