This book is the fourth in Bujold gorgeous romantic Sharing Knife series, and it lives up to the first three books.

Bujold does not do as well writing romances. I've loved her Miles books and her other series so much, it's hard to believe she could stumble. But these books possess none of the crisp, witty views of the world she creates. This is more fevered imagination with the emphasis on fevered. Too bad.

I agree with Tardis (below). This is the fourth book of a series. Unlike authors of some series, Bujold does not prep you much with what has already gone on before in the story. This is not a negative in my mind. The whole series is well-worth reading. I got thoroughly hooked after book #1. book #2 was very good, book #3 OK, and this book, #4, very good.

Bujold, in this series explores the various aspects of prejudice and set beliefs. She does it with a great set of characters, an imaginative saga of daring deeds and romance, with some truly awesome monsters thrown in for good measure.

She had never been much for other people’s babies, though she’d always expected to quite like her own. Still . . . just how scary was it to be handed a baby you couldn’t hand back?

"The boy’s besotted with her.”
“I wonder if she realizes that?” Dag was put in mind of Fawn when he’d first met her, lumbered with desperate self-doubts. How could all these young women not _know_ how lovely they were?

That wasn’t luck, that was preparation. Know the difference. Preparation, you can control.
