Charmingly written “Regency” almost-romance novel, complete with birds and flowers nobody recognizes anymore, but with a modern perspective on the characters. Not a lot goes on, but there was enough suspense built into the plot to keep me going, once I got past the unbelievable premise – that an American lookalike could successfully be absorbed into an English family even for a minute.

The year is 1815. At a boarding school in England, two girls decide to change places so that one of them can realize her dream of being a missionary in India, which is against her family’s wishes. Though the girls look exactly alike, they have nothing else in common either in personality or background. Alvey is an American and virtually a penniless orphan, while the less likable Louisa hails from comfortably well off gentry in the north of England. The story relates Alvey’s struggle to blend into Louisa’s troubled and eccentric family, and the effect she has on them as well as their influence over her development as a person. The possibility of romance hovers over the story, but does not predominate.
