Anna, a young countess, has lived in the glittering city of St Petersburg all her life in an ice-blue palace overlooking the River Neva. But when revolution tears Russia apart, her now-penniless family is forced to flee to England. Armed with an out-of-date book on housekeeping, Anna determines to become a housemaid and she finds work at the Earl of Westerholmeâe(tm)s crumbling but magnificent mansion. The staff and the family are sure there is something not quite right about their new maid âe" but she soon wins them over with her warmth and dedication. Then the young Earl returns home from the war âe" and Anna falls hopelessly in love. But they can never be together: Rupert is engaged to the snobbish and awful Muriel âe" and anyway, Anna is only a servant. Or so everybody thinks . . .

Eva Ibbotson is my favourite author. I have read all her books and a lot of other ones to but this is my favourite book ever! 4.5 stars

The original title of this book is more descriptive. The historical setting of Ibbotson's novels are educational, the read entertaining.

I didn't even get past the first two chapters. I felt the writing was too "sophisticated" for me and therefore bore me. But maybe you'll look past that and enjoy it.

A nicely written, hugely enjoyable adventure through a turbulent England in the mid 1900s. A modern fairytale suitable for all ages.
