'Mothers and Sons' is a written medication on the dramas surrounding this most elemental of relationships. Each of the nine stories focuses on a moment in which an unspoken balance shifts; in which a mother or son do battle, or experience a sudden crisis, thus leaving their conception of who they are subtly or seriously altered.

This collection of short stories is about critical events in relationships. The stories do not have a finality about them, so it was interesting to ponder what might happen next in the characters' lives. There are some shocking stories and there are some sad stories. In two of the stories he writes about abuse by the clergy. I thought A Long Winter was the best story. It is about a young man's search for his mother in The Pyrenees after she fled from his controlling father. This story was powerfully moving, compelling and suspenseful. His careful details make the family drama and the atmosphere in the small Catalonian village seem so real. Nothing is superfluous. It reads more like truth than fiction. This author is exceptionally gifted.

This writer takes you into his characters souls... his ability to capture and draw you into the time, place etc allows the reader absolute immursion into the world he has created...

This examination of different mother-son relationships - some intimate, some estranged, some just strange - is movingly rendered in language that is simultaneously rich and plain-spoken. This is an absorbing read that I think would touch everyone in some way, even if you aren't a mother or a son.

I don't generally read short stories, but these were all thought provoking. I took a few days between stories to fully reflect upon them. There were homosexual overtones to some stories.
