David Wolfe is a successful American lawyer being primed for a run for Congress. But when the phone rings and he hears the voice of Hana Arif--the Palestinian woman with whom he had a secret affair in law school--he begins a completely unexpected journey.

The next day, the prime minister of Israel is assassinated by a suicide bomber while visiting San Francisco. Soon, Hana is accused of being the mastermind behind the murder. Now David faces an agonizing choice: Will he, a Jew, represent her?

The most challenging case of David's career requires that he delve deep into the lives of Hana and her militant Palestinian husband, all the way back to Israel and the West Bank. There he uncovers the couple's dangerous connections...culminating in an explosive trial where the stakes are Hana's life--and the future of two peoples.

A very compelling read. Lots of historical context re the palestinian Israel conflict.
In law school in the US a jew and a palestinian have an affair and 18 years later she is back in the US and accused of murdering the Prime Minister of Israel on American soil. He becomes her lawyer but is never sure of her innocence but in the process travels to Israel to unravel her connection to the crime and at the same time wants to understand the conflicts in the region. There is lots of history to learn.

Patterson weaves a story of passion and intrigue while carefully unravelling the complex issue of the middle east to make it understandable. This is the best of his novels.

This was the first of Patterson's books I read. Couldn't put it down. Amazing story. Have read several other of Patterson's books since. Liked them all, but he does keep using the same beginning plot over and over. The stories are all interesting. Like the international settings - especially in Eclipse.
