Loved this film! Great music and singing!
It's so rare to see quiet (or introverted or agoraphobic) people portrayed well. "Never spoke up because I couldn't get a word in!"

I enjoyed this little film, "little" in its quaint production touches and modest budget. But the characters are vividly drawn, particularly Brenda Blethyn's and Michael Caine's. Jane Horrocks is pretty darling, too, as a mousy woman who discovers some of the lion within. But the strong language and often campy depiction of seamy North Yorkshire life make it not for children.

Horrible movie, mercy! The only notable thing about watching this movie is that after nearly 50 years of movie going it's really unusual to see a film completely unlike any other movie I've ever seen. It joins El Topo and South Park - The Movie in that rare realm. Almost every character is repellant, vulgar, crude, rude and/or has a serious psychological disorder. One scene is reminiscent of The Exorcist. Has an occasional chuckle but otherwise it's a depressing film; very strange film. Be forewarned! Excellent actors (such as Michael Caine and Brenda Blethyn) don't make the cut when acting in a film with a miserable script ~

Early in the movie I had to skip to the end credits because I couldn't believe my ears. That is actually Jane Horrocks singing as Shirley Bassey and Judy Garland. The rest of the cast and story only serve to set up the amazing Ms Horrocks. That girl has pipes!
