The sound track is beautiful, the photography, lovely. The characters range in age from very young to very old, and every one of them is a gem given space to be him or herself. The story is romantic--very romantic--and split between Italy and rural England. The plot is slow--luxuriously slow--like the blooming of a tree in the spring--and the villian is, in my opinion, a very fine fellow. The romance has an element of love between a man and a woman, or two men and a woman...but that is only a small sliver of the romance, which extends to nature, truth, cultural tendrils, wilderness in the garden, and light...and the challenge of surviving the passion of Bach while maintaining social decorum.

Some things are missing from this movie: guns, sexual intercourse, mental depravity, a car chase...special effects. If these are what you are after, you will like many movies, but probably not this one.

Clever and much funnier than the book - watch only if you're fond of beautiful English gardens, fabulous Italian art - and spot on acting where the characters say a thousand things with a single half smile... and then there's the life affirming plot...

Mesmerizing. I could watch it a hundred times!

A fairly good movie...you just have to be aware of the full frontal nudity scene of everyone swimming in a pond. It is definately an adult movie for sure.

I wish I could see what others see in this - I saw it when it was new. I saw it last week. I was not impressed or engaged either time. Was there some chemistry or romance I missed - I didn't see any. I'm still trying to understand what I was supposed to get out of it. What a cast though!

Not deserving of anywhere near 5 stars... the plot was thin, the characters motivations weren't really shown, maybe they assumed everyone read the book. I at least thought it would have been romantic from these reviews, all it had was pretty scenery.

I can't really knock the performances, just the babbling script, direction and possibly the editing because it feels like everything showing how or why or when those two fell for each other was left on the floor.

British entertainment at its best.

Maggie Smith and playful nude guys. I found Daniel Day-Lewis overacting the character a bit.

How can you not like this film.
I bought it and watch it over and over Julian Sands is so cute and all the other actors are just great!

The music is wonderful. This movie is so romantic and funny.

When this movie was first released I watched it over and over again. It is a beautiful movie, great performances by all the cast. My husband says I like it only for the guys running naked - simply not true...

The Reverend Mr. Eager: Remember the facts about this church of Santa Croce; how it was built by faith in the full fervour of medievalism.
Mr. Emerson: Built by faith indeed! That simply means the workers weren't paid properly.

George Emerson: My father says that there is only one perfect view, that of the sky over our heads.
Cecil Vyse: I suspect your father has been reading too much Dante.
