The war is over. Harper, Sharpe and the lads are back in England. And without a war they have all fallen on hard times. The hero of Talavare is given a commission in a local yeomanry where he soon finds himself at odds with the local rabble who work in the mills and who are trying fruitlessly to keep the local magnate from rolling back their already pitiably small wages. What is to become of Sharpe? As his once-wife Jane eloquently put it, now that there is no war "you are an embarrassment, a relic”. This could be the final breakup of our company: Dan’s to stay in Yorkshire; Harper’s got a hankerin’ to go back to Ireland where the women are prettier and the horses are faster (or was that the other way around?). As for Sharpe, perhaps it's to go back to that farm and wife in Normandy. The closing cheer says it all: "Vive la France”
