Brunetti works on cases in Venice, but is called in on this one because the only identification for the old body seems to be a distinctive signet ring from an old Venetian family. Brunetti goes to his father-in-law, who knows everything about Venetian "society" who tells him of the corruption of the family involved. The dead man is the older son, but the younger "ought" to inherit. When Brunetti solves the case, he is posed with a moral dilemma about what to do. This aspect is one of the things I love about Brunetti--he's a moral man, not just a cop.
