I really enjoyed this story. Just get through the first throw or three chapters and you should be hooked for the whole series.

Disney's version of The Black Cauldron is a mixture of this book and it's sequel. The movie also chose to name itself after said sequel, which is admittedly a little cooler of a name. That said, the movie does miss out on the history…

An excellent beginning fantasy story. I've been reading it for years, and am pleased to be sharing it with my kids. This is not "Alexander just doing Tolkien for kids". Are they in the same genre as Lord of the Rings? Sure. But it…

the worst book in the series, I completely agree with the people who saud Taran was a brat in the first book, although I really like all the other characters

I thought I wouldn't like this book but I decided to give it shot anyway. I was a little sceptical that it would be "To kiddy" but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sure, Taran is a bit of a brat at first, Eilonwy was annoying sometimes, and Gurgi…

Chronicles of Prydain, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, Wrinkle in Time - I didn't read all of these adventure/fantasy series when I was a kid. Don't know why - maybe my parents didn't approve of the magic and fairy tale creatures…

This book was a really delightful fantasy romp; it had just enough fantasy language (or, y'know, Welsh,) to make it seem unfamiliar without being wholly alienating (though it was a little rough to get into at the beginning, but that's…

This is the first book in the Prydain Chronicles. I enjoyed the fantasy, Welsh mythology, and humor. Boys and girls will enjoy the wide variety of characters. The book is also a great read-aloud.

Based on Welsh mythology, this first book in the Chronicles of Prydain introduces Taran, Assistant Pig-Keeper, who longs to be a great hero. His chance comes when a hunt for his pig Hen Wen turns into an adventure involving a crown prince,…

This series is a rung lower than Lord of the Rings and maybe a few notches under Chronicles of Narnia; think of it as a light epic fantasy geared specifically to kids. These books were first published over 30 years ago and won buckets full…

I love this series, but The High King is my favorite.

This book is filled with action! Just like Lord of the rings, and the Chronicles of Narnia! it is very entertaining. I highly suggest that you read the the tales of the prydian first so that you can get a little bit of a back story and…

Discover (or rediscover) the Prydain series if you love the Rick Riordan "Percy Jackson" series. It's got the same three qualities: Based on mythology (Welsh) a guy who seems to have nothing going for him, gets thrown into the middle of a…

This was one of my favourite books when I was younger and I still enjoy re-reading it as an adult. Eilonwy is the best.

A favorite from my own childhood, this series (The Book of Three is the first of five) became a repeated read-aloud with my kids. Wise and simple, witty and serious, the adventures of this particular Assistant Pigkeeper are beloved by our…

The beginning of the adventures of Taran, the Assistant Pig Keeper who wants to be a hero, and his friends. The entire series is filled with rich characters and humor and a real sense of good vs. evil (No cartoon villians here). You don't…

Reading this as a kid... what a great idea that was. As I got older, I became interested in the Mabinogion, the collection of legends and stories upon which Alexander's Prydain is based. But none of it ever delighted as much as these…

Fantastic series that still holds up well today. Manages to swerve away from certain cliches that tend to plague the fantasy-adventure genre. Definitely worth a read.
